Gardener's Cottage is a charming example of a Fife estate cottage and like its counterparts would have been the abode of the head gardener, whose proximity to the walled garden would have allowed him easy access to the walled garden. Walled gardens, which became increasingly popular in the 19th century, would have supplied the household with fruit, vegetables and flowers. It was walled to prevent locals stealing such produce and to create a good micro-climate for growing. Many, like the one at Rofsie, also boasted glass houses against south facing walls, which were ideal for growing soft fruits and vines.
Please note that Gardener's Cottage is non-smoking.
