"A wonderful, unusual house combining ancient grandeur with modern luxuries." Ron and Mary Davis, Birmingham
A romantic’s idyll, The Tower of Hallbar, formerly home to the Lockharts of Lee was built circa 1581 and stands next to the Braidwood Burn. Set within five acres of orchard and meadow in the beautiful Clyde Valley, The Tower rises four storeys high and is crowned by a garrett, cap house and parapet walkway.
Particular architectural features include a dovecote built into the façade, an oriel window and two gargoyles - one male and one female - on the exterior and a third built into the unusually steep dog leg staircase.
The building has been evocatively decorated with heraldic ceiling paintings, rich fabrics and oak furniture to invoke the feeling of living in the sixteenth-century. The Tower sleeps 5 with 2 further persons accommodated in the adjacent cottage.
The Tower of Hallbar, awarded 4* Self Catering by the Scottish Tourist Board is the perfect location for a holiday in The Clyde Valley.
The restoration of The Tower of Hallbar could not have been completed without the help of Historic Scotland and the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Tower is available to visit for free on Saturdays between 2 and 3pm, by arrangement.
