About the properties

All of Vivat’s properties are listed buildings of architectural, historical or industrial interest which are identified at risk and in many cases cannot be made available on the open market. The Trustees seek out buildings that are threatened, solve the legal issues and problems that caused their demise and make them available for public enjoyment. Buildings include humble cottages in fragile locations, vernacular buildings of local historical interest and follies which were built for whimsical and amusing reasons.

Holiday accommodation is the hallmark of Vivat and has proved to be most successful as it maintains the integrity of the building with less intervention than a permanent occupier would require, and generates the highest level of return.

However, Vivat is not wedded to this solution; it also considers both permanent residential accommodation and commercial use for derelict buildings. The Trust also conducts feasibility studies and manages property on behalf of others.

The huge cost of repairing historic buildings results in Vivat’s properties being of a small or medium size and as Vivat has no endowment funds are raised on a project by project basis. Experience has also taught that a building which appears to be immediately available will take on average between three and five years to complete.

If you know of an historic building which has been neglected and you think Vivat could help, please email Vivat at enquiries@vivat.org.uk
